Dr. Sam Hijazi, Ph. D.

Dr. Sam Hijazi is an accomplished professor with an impressive career spanning over three decades in the fields of Information Systems and Computer Science, and how in AI. Throughout his tenure, he has been recognized numerous times for his excellence in teaching and leadership, but he also firmly believes in the value of learning from his students and colleagues. Dr. Hijazi, while teaching at Florida Keys College, he has won the prestigious Professor of the Year award seven times, with consecutive victories during the years 1997-1998, 2001-2002, 2002-2003, 2003-2004, 2004-2005, 2005-2006, and 2007-2008. In 2021, he was honored with the Faculty of the Year award by the Student Government Association (SGA) at Texas Lutheran University (TLU). Most recently, in 2023, he received a Teaching Award at TLU, further solidifying his reputation as an outstanding educator.

In 2023, Dr. Hijazi also received the IGNITE Award, presented by Texas Lutheran University's Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). This award, recognizing Individuals and Groups iNspiring Inclusion Through Excellence, highlights Dr. Hijazi’s commitment to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students and faculty members. In addition to his teaching accolades, Dr. Hijazi has been a leader in fostering a culture of service. In 2011, he was recognized as the Servant Leader of the Year at TLU, a testament to his dedication to promoting service learning and computer literacy in the community. His leadership extended beyond the classroom, having been appointed Faculty Chair for 2015-2016, where he played a pivotal role in steering faculty initiatives.

Despite these numerous recognitions, Dr. Hijazi remains a lifelong learner, drawing inspiration from both his students and his colleagues. He believes that teaching is a two-way street, and the insights he gains from interacting with others continue to enrich his own understanding and approach to education.

Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Hijazi is immensely proud of his two beyond-smart children. His son, Esam, 25 (as of 2024), has earned three degrees from Texas Lutheran University in Economics, Finance, and a Master's degree in Data Analytics. His daughter, Rhoda, 24, is currently in her third year of medical school, pursuing her dreams in the medical field. Both Esam and Rhoda are not only academically exceptional but also incredibly kind, helpful, and amazing individuals, qualities that Dr. Hijazi holds dear.

Dr. Hijazi’s contributions to education, coupled with his dedication to family, community service, and inclusion, make him a distinguished figure in academia. His impact is felt not only through his numerous awards but also in the lives of countless students, colleagues, and his own remarkable children.
